Fostering Healthy Kids
Fostering Healthy Kids (FHK) is Counseling4Kids’ largest program, with over 50 therapists serving hundreds of children, ages 2-18 years old, each year. Fostering Healthy Kids provides mental health treatment to children and youth in out of home placement with the Department of Children and Family Services, as well as those who are at risk of foster care placement and involvement with the child welfare system. This program targets children who have experienced neglect, abuse, and family disruption and as a result are exhibiting symptoms of emotional distress and impaired functioning in significant areas of their lives.
Using a “clinic without walls” model of in-home therapy, our licensed clinicians travel throughout Los Angeles County to provide individual and family therapy to children and youth in the South Bay, South and East Los Angeles, the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys, Palmdale, Santa Clarita and Lancaster. Through individual and family therapy, FHK therapists help reduce children’s symptoms of depression, attention-deficit disorder, oppositional and disruptive behaviors, anxiety, attachment problems, and grief and loss. Therapists draw upon a wide range of treatment models and interventions to best meet the mental health needs of each child. Bilingual clinicians are also available to provide therapy in the language preferred by the child and caregivers. Treatment typically lasts between 9 and 12 months, depending on each child’s situation, but can continue longer if necessary.
Fostering Healthy Kids provides a full range of outpatient services, including a comprehensive initial mental health assessment, in-home individual therapy with the child, family therapy with foster parents, relative caregivers and/or biological parents, case management, medication evaluation and support, psychological and neuropsychological evaluation, reunification services and permanency planning, linkage to additional resources, and collaboration with the Department of Children and Family Services, Foster Family Agency, school and Children’s Court attorney. All children served by this program have full-scope Medi-Cal insurance.
Referrals to Fostering Healthy Kids are made by the Department of Children and Family Services County Social Workers, the child’s attorney, Court Appointed Special Advocates, foster parents, relative caregivers, or Foster Family Agencies.
